3.5 stars before the cheat mode update. With this latest update a cheat mode is always on and absolutely destroys the game. you cannot turn it off and it creates a god mode experience that defeats the main purpose and challenge of the game.
This was a really fun experience before the most recent cheat update. A few flaws here and there, a lot of other reviewers complain about the overly large role of random chance in the game, which could use a little more work. My complaints are mostly with certain game mechanics/UI, such as not marking already visited planets and not doing a better job with detailing system effects. Part of the fun is discovering how the world works, but it seems inconsistent and requires a lot of memorization, which kind of frustrates the experience.
A lot of comparisons to FTL and it is similar, but not nearly as polished. FTL is near flawless in almost every aspect, so it is a tough comparison, but Out There comes close when it is working.
